Et si Battle Beast était la véritable étoile montante du heavy power mélodique finlandais à chanteuse burnée ? Malgré le changement de frontwoman après le premier album, Anton Kabanen et ses amis n'ont pas attendu bien longtemps avant d'offrir leur deuxième offrande, sobrement intutlée Battle Beast et disponible chez Nuclear Blast depuis ce lundi 20 mai.
C'est d'ailleurs le maître à penser du groupe qui s'est entretenu avec nous pour une interview vérité.
Ju de Melon : Bonjour Anton, et merci de répondre à nos questions !
Anton Kabanen : Hey ! C'est un plaisir.
Tout d'abord parlons du principal changement qui a marqué le groupe entre les deux premiers albums : le départ de votre ex-chanteuse Nitte Valo. Etait-ce une décision dure à encaisser ou tout s'est passé sans problème ?
Et bien, c'est elle qui a décidé de partir. Et je ne sais même pas pour quelles raisons. Elle nous a juste envoyé un e-mail totalement inattendu et voilà, c'était plié. Après ça, nous ne l'avons plus jamais revue. Au final, elle s'est juste enfuie du groupe et franchement peu importe si elle avait de bonnes raisons ou non, même si c'était un cas de force majeure. Le fait est que tu ne peux quitter ainsi un groupe sans un minimum de respect envers les autres membres. Fort heureusement, les choses se sont arrangées et nous avons même su trouver mieux en la personne de Noora.
Justement, Noora Louhimo est votre nouvelle chanteuse. Comment l'avez-vous recrutée ?
J'ai trouvé Noora grâce à une vidéo Youtube, un pur hasard. Elle chantait une reprise de Janis Joplin, une agréable surprise. Je recherchais une chanteuse (ou un chanteur) qui serait capable de chanter tout ce que je pouvais composer, et avec Noora je savais que je n'aurais aucun compromis à trouver dans mon écriture. Je l'ai contactée dès que j'ai pu, nous sommes de suite rentrés dans le vif du sujet et le matin suivant elle m'a rappelé pour me dire qu'elle était d'accord pour devenir notre chanteuse. Presque aussitôt, elle s'est retrouvée en studio à enregistrer nos nouvelles chansons et en préparation pour la tournée européenne en tant qu'ouverture de Sonata Arctica.
Est-ce que Noora a changé un peu l'approche musicale du groupe et si oui comment ?
Non, aucunement. Ce que Noora a apporté c'est sa voix unique et puissante mais cela n'a affecté en rien les compositions. Toutes les chansons étaient déjà prêtes lorsqu'elle a rejoint le groupe.
Elle n'a donc pas participé aux compositions ou aux paroles...
Non. J'ai l'habitude de composer et écrire tout seul à la maison pour ensuite les présenter aux autres membres quand elles sont terminées. Rien n'a changé pour cet album. Peut-être tenterons-nous une approche différente pour une chanson ou deux à l'avenir.
Pourquoi avoir choisi le nom du groupe pour nommer l'album ?
C'est une vraie déclaration qui marque un nouveau départ dans notre carrière. C'est le premier album que nous avons produit nous-même et sur lequel nous avons eu un contrôle total. Personne n'est venu interférer dans nos décisions. Tout ceci étant bien sûr amplifié par l'arrivée de Noora qui rend ce nouveau voyage encore plus évident.
Quels sont les thèmes principaux des paroles et est-ce que certaines histoires sont liées entre elles ?
Les chansons de cet album sont à ranger dans trois catégories différentes. Il y a tout d'abord cette histoire principale qui relate les aventures de la Bête et d'autres personnages dans ce monde et univers dominés par les machines. L'histoire ne possède pas un ordre chronologique particulier cependant. Il s'agit en quelque sorte d'une série animée où chaque chanson représente un épisode indépendant. Ces chansons sont fortement inspirées par la science fiction, le cyberpunk et le fantastique. La plupart d'entre elles sont basées sur des personnages à forte personnalité qui vivent à la limite, luttant pour leur survie, regardent le danger et la mort dans les yeux en leur disant "Viens, je t'attends !". C'est un peu la philosophie de Battle Beast.
La seconde catégorie des thèmes abordés est basée sur le manga et animé Berserk. Je suis un immense fan de cette série, je vous la recommande fortement. Vous le regretterez pas, croyez-moi ! L'histoire est vraiment très prenante et les personnages ont un gros charisme. Quatre chansons sont donc consacrées à Berserk : "Out of Control", "Golden Age", "Kingdom" et "Fight, Kill, Die".
La dernière catégore rassemble les morceaux qui ne parlent d'aucune des séries sus-mentionnées, c'est plus ouvert. Une chanson, "Rain Man", est basée sur mes expériences personnelles tandis que "Neuromancer" par exemple est inspirée par le roman du même nom.
Comment s'est déroulé le processus de composition et d'enregistrement ? Différent par rapport au précédent album ?
Comme je l'ai mentionné avant, j'ai tout écrit seul à la maison avant et ensuite nous avons débuté l'enregistrement. Celui-ci ne s'est pas déroulé aussi rapidement que prévu à cause du départ de notre chanteuse en plein milieu et cette tournée qui n'était pas prévue à l'arrivée de Noora. C'est arrivé un peu par surprise je dois l'avouer ! Sur cet album, j'ai été le producteur principal, assisté par Janne (NDLR : Janne Björkroth, claviers). Sur le précédent opus, nous n'avions pas pu nous concentrer sur chaque détail mais cette fois-ci nous avons pu faire ce que nous voulions. Nous sommes d'ailleurs plus satsisfaits du résultat final avec Battle Beast. Notre troisième album sera également auto-produit.
Nous pouvons ressentir pas mal d'influences sur ce nouvel album. Quelles seraient celles que tu mentionnerais en premier pour quelqu'un qui veut le découvrir ?
Impossible de n'en citer qu'une seule... Disons que si vous aimez le heavy metal basé sur le fantastique et la science fiction qui sonne comme Judas Priest, W.A.S.P., Manowar, Accept, Nightwish et Black Sabbath - un peu tout ça mélangé - vous aimerez Battle Beast.
Y a-t-il quelques hommages volontaires sur certaines chansons ? Comme l'intro "Send Me a Sign" (Gamma Ray) sur "Let It Roar", le feeling "Wish I Had an Angel" (Nightwish) sur "Out of Control", l'intro "Iron Fist" (Motörhead) sur "Fight, Kill, Die" or la ligne de basse de "Heaven and Hell" (Black Sabbath) sur "Black Ninja"?
Rien d'intentionné. Après des années à écouter et écrire de la musique, les "bonnes choses" restent en tête et du coup les influences ressortent naturellement. C'est aussi simple que ça. Pour moi il n'existe que la bonne et la mauvaise musique. Peu importe le genre. Ensuite ça se ressemble toujours, notes après notes. Le heavy metal est une façon d'exprimer ce que tu ressens et les notes que tu écris. Et je pense que les hommages non volontaires à ces bonnes chansons sont une bonne chose. Après tout, qui aurait envie de faire cela avec une chanson de merde ? La bonne musique doit survivre à jamais !
Le premier album Steel a eu un bon succès d'estime parmi les fans de metal, quel regard portes-tu sur celui-ci deux ans après ? Et en quoi Battle Beast marque une évolution selon toi ?
Selon moi, les chansons sur les deux albums ne sont pas si différentes que ça. La plus grosse différence, ou évolution, se trouve au niveau de la production. Nous n'étions pas satisfaits de ce premier album quand il est sorti et je pense même que nous devrions le ré-enregistrer à l'avenir. Tu n'imagines pas à quel point la production peut ainsi affecter le résultat final... entre les deux albums, c'est un peu le jour et la nuit. L'enregistrement et la production de Battle Beast nous a procuré une expérience enrichissante dans l'art de faire des albums. Nous ne pourrons que mieux faire à partir de maintenant.
Vous allez tourner avec Powerwolf l'automne prochain, avec notamment une date à Paris. Qu'attendez-vous de cette aventure ?
Nous voulons passer du bon temps sur la route et donner à 100% le heavy metal de Battle Beast. Nous espérons y voir des foules remplies de vieux et nouveaux fans du groupe !
Quel est ton lien personnel avec la France ?
Nous avons passé un super moment en France, nous adorons jouer là-bas. Nous y avons également fait une vidéo sympa lors de notre tournée avec Nightwish en 2012, réalisée par Denis Goria. Le public y était génial... et bruyant ! Vivement qu'on revienne. Nous avons également passé une journée de repos à Lyon, de très bons souvenirs, c'est un bel endroit.

Hi, thank your for answering our questions!
ANTON: Hey, nice to be here!
First of all, let's talk about the major change that took place between the two album: your former vocalist Nitte Valo left the band. Was it a hard and unexpected decision or did everything go smoothly?
ANTON: Well, it was solely her decision. I had no idea of her intentions of leaving the band. She just sent me an e-mail out of the blue and that was it. After that we never saw her. Basically she just ran away from the band so we don't care what the reason for her departure is, even if there's a super good reason. The point is that if you wanna leave a band you should do it in a respectful manner towards the remaining members of the band. But luckily things turned out to be even better than before after we found Noora.
Noora Louhimo is now your new female singer. How and why did you pick her?
ANTON: I found Noora through YouTube just by sheer luck. She was singing a Janis Joplin cover and I was pleasantly surprised. I was looking for a singer who could sing everything that I write for her/him and after I heard Noora I knew I wouldn't have to do any compromises in the songwriting. So I contacted her as soon as I found out her contact information. We had a short but straight-to-the-point conversation and the next morning she calls me back to tell that she's willing to fill the boots of the lead singer. And before we knew she was already recording the new Battle Beast songs in the studio and getting ready for the European tour we had coming as a support act for Sonata Arctica.
How did Noora's arrival change the musical approach of the band?
ANTON: It didn't. What Noora brought musically is her own unique and powerful voice but it didn't affect the songwriting. All the songs were already written when she joined the band.
Did she participate in the musical or lyrics writing?
ANTON: No. I usually write the songs and lyrics home alone and present them to the band when they're finished. This time was no different. Maybe we'll try a different approach for a song or two in the future.
Why have you chosen to name this new album with the band's name?
ANTON: It's statement and a new beginning in our career. It's the first album we produced ourselves and we had total control over everything. No one interfered in our decisions. Also the fact that Noora joined the band boosted the feeling of embarking on a new journey.
What are the main topics in the lyrics? Any stories related together?
ANTON: The album songs are divided into three different categories. There's this main story about the adventures of the Beast and other characters in the machine dominated world and universe. The story doesn't proceed in a chronological order though. It's more like a cartoon series where each song represents an individual episode. The songs are heavily inspired by science fiction, cyberpunk and fantasy. Most of them tend to focus on strong characters who live on the edge, who are on the brink of survival, who look danger and death in the eye and say ”Come get some!” That's the philosophy and the nature of Battle Beast.
The second category is based on the Berserk-anime and manga. I'm a huge fan of this particular series. You might wanna check it out. You won't regret! In the matter of fact the story reaches amazing heights and the characters in it are very strong personas. Our new album has four songs based on Berserk. Out Of Control, Golden Age, Kingdom and Fight, Kill, Die.
The last category is open. It's about everything else that's not directly related to either of the stories mentioned earlier. There's a song, Rain Man, based on my personal experiences but Neuromancer on the other hand is a song inspired by a novel of the same name.
How was the composing and recording/producing process? Different from the previous album?
ANTON: Like I mentioned before, I wrote all the songs home alone and after that we began the recording process. The recording process didn't go as quickly as planned because our first singer left the band in the middle of the process and then we did a tour after we found Noora. The tour was not planned when we began the studio work, so it came as a surprise to us. I was the main producer and Janne was the co-producer. On our previous album we didn't have the chance to concentrate on many of the album details but this time we could do anything we wanted. We're happier with the results of "Battle Beast". Our third album will be self-produced as well.
We can feel a lot of influences on this new album. Which ones would you mention to someone who wants to discover the album?
ANTON: Impossible just to say one because that's too narrow. I'd say if you like sci-fi and fantasy driven heavy metal that sounds like Judas Priest, W.A.S.P., Manowar, Accept, Nightwish and Black Sabbath all put together you gonna love "Battle Beast"!
Are there some "deliberate tributes" on some songs? Like the "Send Me a Sign" (Gamma Ray) intro on "Let It Roar", the "Wish I Had an Angel" (Nightwish) feeling on "Out of Control", the "Iron Fist" (Motörhead) introduction on "Fight, Kill, Die" or the "Heaven and Hell" (Black Sabbath) bass line on "Black Ninja"?
ANTON: None of this is intentional. After years of listening and writing music the "good stuff" remains in my mind and therefore the influences come out naturally. Simple as that. To me there's only good and bad music. It doesn't matter what genre it is. It's always the same, just notes after notes. Heavy Metal is the way you express yourself and the notes that you write. And I think that unintentional "tributes" to good songs is a cool thing. I mean, who the hell would want to do a "tribute" to a crappy song. Right? Good music should live forever!
Your album "Steel" had a very positive success among the metal fans, how is your view on it two years after? And in what way "Battle Beast" shows an evolution according to you?
ANTON: In my opinion the songs on "Steel" and "Battle Beast" aren't that different. The biggest difference, or evolution, is the production. We weren't satisfied with our debut album when it came out and I'm even thinking we should re-record "Steel" in the future. You wouldn't believe how much the production affects the final result. It's like comparing night and day. Recording and producing "Battle Beast" gave us invaluable knowledge and experience in making albums. We're only gonna get better from now on.
You'll have a tour with Powerwolf next fall, with one date in France (Paris). What are you expectations?
ANTON: To have a great time on the road and give the audience 100% Battle Beast syle heavy metal. So we're hoping to witness venues packed with old and new fans of Battle Beast!
What is your personal story with France? (culture, artists from our country, fans...)
ANTON: We've had awesome time in France. Love to play there. We also made a cool video in France on our tour with Nightwish, in 2012, which was directed by Denis Goria. The audience has always been just awesome - and loud! Can't wait to come back!
We also spent one off day in Lyon on both of the European tours we've had. Great memories and beautiful places.
