Frosttide, ou l'une des révélations/découvertes de l'année 2013 pour La Grosse Radio Metal (voir notre bilan best of 2013) !
Fort d'un premier album, intitulé Awakening, bougrement bien ficelé et d'un passage remarqué en ouverture du Heidenfest à Paris, le jeune groupe finlandais de folk death metal épique a su gagner ses premiers galons dans le milieu avec brio.
Et c'est avant une large tournée française en compagnie de Ensiferum que l'une de ses têtes pensantes, le jeune chanteur-guitariste Joni Snoro, a tenu à nous accorder quelques mots.
Ju de Melon : Joni, avant de parler du groupe, parlons un peu de toi. Tu as seulement 20 ans et pourtant déjà plusieurs années de musique derrière toi. Comment as-tu commencé à chanter/jouer et quels sont les artistes/groupes qui t'ont inspiré pour devenir musicien/chanteur ?
Joni Snoro : J'ai commencé la guitare à l'âge de 12 ans. J'ai reçu ma première gratte en cadeau de Noël. Quand j'ai démarré Frosttide nous n'avions pas de chanteur, c'est la raison pour laquelle j'ai commencé à chanter.
Le premier groupe de metal que j'ai commencer à écouter fut Nightwish, et petit à petit je me suis mis à écouter des trucs plus heavy comme Children of Bodom. Ensuite, je suis tombé sur le folk metal, et quand j'ai écouté Ensiferum pour la première fois j'ai été comblé. Voici mon histoire en gros.
Le groupe a donc été formé quand tu avais seulement 15 ans, en 2009. Comment a démarré cette aventure et est-ce les autres membres furent facile à trouver ?
Au début c'était plus une blague qu'autre chose de la part de mon pote. Il a dit "tiens, jouons du metal héroïque" et j'ai commencé à écrire des chansons du genre. Plus le temps passait, et plus je me rendais compte que c'était vraiment le genre dans lequel je voulais évoluer. Et maintenant nous avons un groupe qui s'appelle Frosttide !
J'ai d'abord trouvé Joonas à la batterie puis Juho aux guitares. C'était facile car nous étions des amis de la même école. Mais jusque là il a toujours été très compliqué de trouver un bassiste et un claviériste fixes.
Comment avez-vous choisi le nom Frosttide et a-t-il une signification particulière pour vous ?
Il n'y a pas de véritable histoire épique derrière ce nom. En 2010 nous avons réfléchi à quelques noms avec Juho, puis on a eu cette idée pour Frosttide. J'ai ensuite suggéré ce nom aux autres membres qui ont vraiment aimé. Voilà tout.
Deux démos EP et désormis un album, Awakening, paru il y a quelques mois. Il s'agit d'un album conceptuel relatant l'histoire d'un groupe guerriers voulant aider un village contre l'invasion ennemie. Etait-ce dur à construire ou est-ce plus simple pour toi d'écrire la musique avec une histoire en tête ?
Nous écrivons toujours la musique en premier et ensuite seulement nous écrivons les paroles. Cette fois-ci nous avons eu l'idée de raconter une histoire, tout s'est décidé lors du processus de composition. Juho a écrit la plupart des chansons sur Awakening et je me suis occupé des dernières paroles après que les chansons aient été prêtes. Nous avons discuté de l'histoire au préalable ce qui a rendu le choix des atmosphères plus simple à faire. Au final, on peut dire que c'était une bonne idée pour l'écriture de cet album.
Au final, l'écriture de la musique est-il donc un travail d'équipe ?
Sur le premier EP, j'ai quasi tout écrit. Sur le second, environ 50-50 entre Juho et moi. Sur Awakening, Juho a écrit la plupart des chansons et j'ai rédigé la plupart des paroles. Sur l'album, chaque membre y est allé de ses arrangements et ainsi créé de nouvelles idées pour chaque instrument. Lors de l'enregistrement, nous avons également mis en commun certaines idées pour rendre le résultat encore meilleur.
Vous avez un nouveau claviériste sur l'album, du nom de Felipe Munoz. A-t-il apporté sa touche personnelles aux ambiances de l'album ?
Juho et Felipe ont pas mal travaillé ensemble sur les claviers/orchestrations de l'album. Juho a fait les bases et Felipe les a complexifié à sa sauce ! Il a apporté beaucoup de ses arrangements sur l'opus !
La pochette a été réalisée par Mikko Henrik Huotari. Est-ce un ami du groupe ou a-t-il été contacté spécialement pour l'occasion ? A-t-il suivi quelques instructions précises ?
Notre claviériste Felipe nous l'a conseillé. Mikko est un de ses amis et ils ont déjà travaillé ensemble avec brio sur les précédents groupes de Felipe. Mikko nous a fait part de sa vision et nous lui avons donné une liberté totale car nous savions qu'il avait déjà eu pas mal de bonnes idées par le passé. Une fois le visuel créé, nous lui avons demandé d'ajuster quelques détails avant d'obtenir la version finale.
L'album est sorti fin septembre chez NoiseArt Records. Comment êtes-vous rentrés en contact avec le label ?
En fait nous avons pas mal discuté avec Stefan Hattinger de Rock The Nation et c'est lui qui nous a recommandé à NoiseArt Records ! Nous avons ensuite parlé avec eux et peu de temps plus tard signé un contrat.
Es-tu satisfait des réactions sur l'album jusque là ?
Les retours ont été très bon, cela nous a surpris ! Nous sommes vraiment heureux pour l'instant !
Est-ce que Awakening fait parti d'un one-shot conceptuel ou bien une suite est-elle prévue sur le ou les prochain(s) album(s) ?
Désolé je ne peux pas encore en dire plus !
Vous avez été choisi pour ouvrir le festival Heidenfest l'an passé et on a pu vous voir à Paris au mois de septembre. Comment s'est présentée une telle opportunité ?
Quand nous avons signé avec NoiseArt et l'agence Rock the Nation, on nous a offert cette possibilité de jouer au Heidenfest. C'était une opportunité en or pour promouvoir Awakening juste après sa sortie. C'était une superbe expérience de jouer ces concerts, partager avec les groupes et rencontrer des gens qui aiment notre musique.
Quels sont tes meilleurs souvenirs de cette tournée ?
C'est une question très difficile car nous retenons bon nombre de moments inoubliables de ce Heidenfest ! Tout d'abord je tiens à dire qu'il s'agissait là de notre premier show à l'étranger pour moi, Juho, Joonas et notre bassiste live Lauri donc ça restera un grand souvenir. Après il est difficile de choisir des instants particuliers... Tout était génial, que ce soit l'équipe technique, les groupes, les endroits que nous avons visités ainsi que les salles de concerts !
Frosttide est de retour en France en cette fin de mois de janvier en ouverture de la tournée française d'Ensiferum pour six dates. J'imagine que vous êtes excités à cette idée !
En effet, nous le sommes à l'idée de revenir ! La dernière fois que nous avons joué à Paris c'était fantastique. La foule était vraiment folle entre slams, pogos... bref, un concert mémorable !
Si tu dois citer trois "héros" qui t'ont inspiré, qui choisirais-tu ?
1- Tout d'abord Markus Toivonen de Ensiferum, car c'est le premier groupe du genre que j'ai aimé et qu'il s'agit d'une grande influence pour moi.
2- Ensuite je citerais Tuomas Holopainen de Nightwish. Nightwish fut mon tout premier groupe de metal et je crois que je suis tombé de suite amoureux de ces claviers et arrangements orchestraux. C'est grâce à ce groupe que j'ai écouté de plus en plus de metal.
3- Et enfin, Jonne Järvelä de Korpiklaani ! Pourquoi ? Parce que pour moi Jonne est le père du folk metal !
Une autre question difficile : donne-nous tes cinq albums de metal préférés !
Je me suis posé cette question un bon moment et je pense sincèrement qu'il est impossible d'y répondre. Par contre je peux te donner mes cinq albums préférés en ce moment :

Une dernière question : es-tu plus ou moins relié à la France ou à sa culture ? Etais-tu déjà venu avant le show de Paris ?
Je dois avouer que je ne connais pas grand chose sur la France. Seulement les trucs de base du genre la Tour Eiffel, les Catacombes de Paris, la baguette de pain... et Gojira !! C'était ma première fois en France au mois de septembre et j'ai beaucoup apprécié ! Les metalleux français sont géniaux, un public extraordinaire qui nous a laissé les meilleurs souvenirs !

English version of the interview :
Joni, before talking about the band, let's have a few words about you. You are only 20 years old but still you have a few years of music behind you. How did you start playing/singing and what bands/artists inspired you to become a musician/singer?
I started playing guitar when I was 12 years old. My first Guitar was a christmas present. When I started Frosttide we didn’t have singer so that’s why I started to sing.
I remember that first metal band ever that I started to listen to was Nightwish and little by little I started to listen more heavier music like Children of Bodom etc. Then i found „folk metal“ music and when I heard Ensiferum first time I was sold out. Long story short.
So the band was formed when you were only 15, in 2009. How did the adventure start and were all the band members easy to find at that time?
I think that first it was more like a joke from my friend. He was like „let‘s play heroic metal“ and then i started to write stuff for that. As the time passed I noticed that „damn that’s the genre what I wanna play“ and now we have band called Frosttide!
First i found Joonas for the band (drums) and after that Juho (guitars). It was quite easy because we were friends and we were in the same school etc. but i think that in our career it has been always really hard to find bass player and keyboard player.
How did you find this name Frosttide and does it have a special meaning for you?
There’s no huge epic story behind the band's name. Back in the year 2010 I thought band names with Juho. Suddenly I got the idea of the name "Frosttide". I suggested that name to the rest of the band and they liked it. That’s it.
Two demo EPs and now a full album entitled Awakening. It is a concept album built as a musical journey and which tells the story of a group of warriors that embark on a mission with the aim of helping a village against an enemy invasion. Was it hard to put together or is it easier for you to write music with a story on mind?
We always write music first and after that we write the lyrics. This time we had in mind the idea of telling story, this came up during the song writing process. Juho wrote most of the songs to Awakening and I wrote the final lyrics after the songs were ready. We discussed about the story when the songs were not yet ready making it easier to find right atmosphere to them. I think that at the end it was quite smooth plan to write this album.
Did you write all the music or is it a "band work"?
In the first EP I wrote almost everything, in the second EP I wrote songs 50% - 50% with Juho and in Awakening Juho wrote most of the songs and I have wrote most of the lyrics. In Awakening also every band member made arrangements and created new ideas for their own instruments. Also when we recorded together we got lots of good ideas which made result even better.
You have a new keyboard player on this album named Felipe Munoz. Did he bring his own sound or this atmosphere was pretty much "directed" by you?
Juho and Felipe have done lots of cooperation together with the keyboards/ Orchestrations in Awakening. Basically Juho made keyboard bases and Felipe raised to life those bases making them his own. Felipe has brought lot’s of his own sound and arrangements to the album!
The artwork has been designed by Mikko Henrik Huotari. Is he a friend of the band or an artist you have contacted specially for this work? Did he make it with specific instructions?
Felipe suggested him to us. Mikko is a friend of Felipe and they have been working together before on Felipe's previous bands with great results! Mikko told his vision to us and we gave him free hands because he had really good ideas about artworks/ promo-pictures etc. Once he had the artwork ready, we told him to adjust some minor details and the artwork was complete!
The album was released at the end of September via NoiseArt Records. How did you get in touch with this record company?
Actually first we started conversations with Stefan Hattinger from Rock The Nation and he suggested us to NoiseArt Records! Then we started to talk with the guys from NoiseArt Records and little bit later we signed the deal with them.
Are you happy with the fans and media reactions so far?
The feedback have been surprisingly good so far! We are really happy about that!
Is Awakening a "one-piece" concept or is it meant to have a sequel in one or many other albums?
I’m sorry but I can't tell you more details for now!
You were picked to open the Heidenfest festival and we saw you there in Paris in September. How did this opportunity happen?
When we signed deal with NoiseArt Records & Rock The Nation booking, we were offered by them to enter to play in Heidenfest. It was a great opportunity to promote Awakening after its release. It was great experience for us to play the shows, share with the bands and meet new people who liked our music.
What are you best memories of this tour?
That’s really hard question because we get so many unforgettable memories from Heidenfest! At first i want say that these were the first shows abroad for me, Juho, Joonas and our live bass player Lauri so that was a good memory! We have so many „great memories“ from that tour so it’s really hard to pic up only some of them. The line-up was awesome, the crew was awesome, gig places were awesome, towns/ cities/ countries where we played first time was awesome and everything was awesome.
You are back in France in 2014, opening for the French Ensiferum Tour! Excited I guess? Ensiferum guys must have loved you very much!
Yeah we’re coming back and we are very excited about that! Can’t wait! Last time when we played in France it was amazing! Crowd was really crazy! Stage diving, mosh-pits, people jumped to the stage etc. It was a memorable show!
If you have to name three "heroes" that inspred you (musically or not), who would you choose and why?
1.My first answer is Markus Toivonen from Ensiferum, because I think that Ensiferum was first band in this genre that I have heard and it’s one of the biggest influences for me!
2.My second answer is Tuomas Holopainen from Nightwish. Nightwish were my first metal band that I started to listen to and I think that I felt in love to those awesome keyboard/ orchestral things and because that band and that guy I started to listen more metal music.
3.Last but not least i want to say Jonne Järvelä from Korpiklaani.. and do i have to explain this? In my opinion Jonne is the father of folk metal music!
Another hard question: give us your five favorite metal albums ever!
I have wondered this question really long time and i realized that it’s impossible to say which are my all-time top 5 favorite albums. Is that possible to say which are my top 5 albums at the moment in this genre? And here we go again:

One last question: are you related somehow to France and its culture? What do you like there (music or anything else) and was it your first time in our country last September?
First I want to say that I don’t know much about France. I know only the basic things like Eiffel Tower, Catacombs of Paris, that the people are eating lots of French loaf & Gojira! Last September was my first time in France and I liked it a lot! French metalheads were totally awesome audience and that was best memories for me from France!
