Voyager, un groupe australien que nous suivons déjà depuis plusieurs années sur La Grosse Radio Metal (et depuis le tout premier album en ce qui concerne votre serviteur), mérite d'être plus reconnu en Europe et plus particulièrement en France. Offrant un melting pot entre musique progressive, metal, ambiant, moderne et groove djent des plus réussis, le cinquième album du quintet originaire de Perth devrait en surprendre plus d'un. Avant de faire son analyse, nous nous sommes entrenus avec le fondateur et frontman (chanteur-claviériste) du groupe, le très sympathique Daniel Estrin.
Bonjour Daniel, merci de répondre à nos questions ! Quel est ton état d'esprit avant la sortie officielle du nouvel opus ?
Excité à l'idée que le monde puisse enfin entendre ce que les gens appellent "notre meilleur album à date".
Le cinquième album s'intitude donc V... Un nom à la fois simple et risqué car il se doit d'être ainsi une pierre angulaire de votre discographie. Comment l'avez-vous choisi et avez-vous hésité avec d'autres noms ?
En fait à la base on n'avait pas prévu de lui en donner et au final on s'est dit que V était un nom trop cool pour ne pas être utilisé. C'est simple, clair, et en plus V est le chiffre romain pour indiquer cinq. Ca prend tout son sens.
Vous avez démarré une campagne de crowdfunding afin de sortir cet album. Une nouvelle façon de se battre contre les difficultés de l'industrie musicale ou un moyen de plus ompliquer les fans ?
Pour être honnête, nous sommes un peu frustrés par l'industrie musicale, c'est pourquoi nous avons décidé de prendre les choses en main. C'était une décision difficile car loin d'être sans risques (il suffit de voir comment Orgy a foiré sa campagne et l'a payé par la suite) mais nous étions plutôt confiants concernant notre fanbase afin d'atteindre l'objectif. Et nous avons pratiquement doublé les dons prévus, ce qui est incroyable ! Le crowdfunding un excellent moyen pour impliquer les fans et leur permettre d'aider le groupe directement. L'industrie de la musique est en pleine mutation, et nous sommes fiers de faire partie d'un nouvel élan.
Au final, est-ce que le CD a été tout de même supporté par Sensory Records ou est-il 100% auto-financé ?
Sensory ne s'est impliqué en aucun cas, c'est un album 100% auto-produit, auto-financé et auto-managé sur notre propre label IAV (I Am Voyager) Records. J'en suis très fier !
Musicalement, cet album sonne plus complexe qu'avant mais est pourtant TRES accrocheur. Cela a du vous demander beaucoup de travail... est-ce que le processus d'écriture et d'enregistrement s'est avéré plus difficile et différent qu'avant ?
Pas du tout, c'était en fait encore plus facile qu'avant. Nous avons si bien travaillé ensemble que tout s'est parfaitement passé et qu'au final l'album s'avère génial et accrocheur. C'était un vrai travail de groupe dans son ensemble, plus que jamais. En fait, cela a presque demandé plus de travail d'organiser sa sortie et sa promotion après l'enregistrement. Comme notre batteur Ash l'a récemment dit, "nous avons plus passé de temps à 'être un groupe' qu'à jouer de la musique". Ainsi va le business j'imagine.
Vous avez choisi "Breaking Down" comme premier single, ce choix a-t-il été guidé par une volonté précise ?
Je pense qu'il s'agit d'une bonne transition entre le "vieux" et le "nouveau" Voyager. D'ailleurs c'est amusant mais pas mal de gens pensent qu'il n'est pas représentatif de notre nouveau style. Notre nouveau video clip a été consacré à "Hyperventilating", une chanson groovy qui je pense va sonner très moderne à l'oreille des gens, mais pourtant cela reste du Voyager à 100%.
Sur ce nouveau CD, les vieux fans reconnaitront "The Morning Light", une chanson qu'on peut écouter sur le premier opus Element V. Pourquoi avoir choisi d'en enregistrer une nouvelle version ?
C'est amusant car c'est la seule chanson de Element V qui sonne comme une chanson qu'on aurait pu écrire aujourd'hui. C'était donc un choix naturel de la ré-enregistrer avec un son un peu plus moderne. Je voulais cependant aussi conserver le feeling originel et ne pas trop en rajouter, je pense que nous avons réussi.
Sur cet album, nous avons deux guests. Mentionnons tout d'abord Daniel Tompkins sur "Breaking Down", il était d'ailleurs déjà présent sur "The Pensive Disarray" du précédent opus. Cela veut-il dire qu'une véritable amitié est née entre lui et le groupe ?
Absolument, et nous ne pouvions rêver meilleurs screams mélodiques ! Daniel a d'ailleurs un projet absolument magnifique avec notre guitariste Scott appelé Absent Hearts, l'appeler à nouveau était donc une chose naturelle.
La chanteuse Zemyna Kuliukas apparait sur "A Beautiful Mistake". Peux-tu nous en dire plus sur elle et comment elle a fini par figurer sur cette chanson ?
La première fois que j'ai vu Zemyna sur scène c'était avec son ancien groupe Dead Set Radio où je suis tombé amoureux de son chant. Sa voix ressemble un peu à celle de Anneke van Giesbergen et je me suis dit que ce serait génial de l'avoir sur ce qui est peut-être le morceau le plus progressif de l'album. Le final ressemble vraiment à du Devin Townsend, c'est parfait ! C'était aussi très cool de travailler avec elle, et je suis certain que nous ferons d'autres choses ensemble à l'avenir.
De manière générale, les paroles de l'album couvrent-elle une ligne directrice liée à un certain concept ou parlent-elles de sujets différents ?
Définitivement moins introspectives que le précédent album, voici un passage en revue des différents thèmes morceau par morceau :
Hyperventilating : Beaucoup de gens à qui je parle ont des crises d'angoisse (ce qui n'est pas mon cas), j'ai donc pensé que ça pourrait être un thème intéressant. C'est quelque chose qui vient de nulle part et vous remue.
Breaking Down : Celle-ci est plus introspective. Ou quand on quitte une certaine zone de confort et qu'on perd totalement le contrôle...
A Beautiful Mistake : Explore les merveilles du monde et comment celui-ci s'est transformé. Un endroit à la fois merveilleux et effrayant.
Fortune Favours the Blind : Interlude avant "You, The Shallow". Très George Orwell dans son contenu.
You, The Shallow : Une des rares chansons politiques. Un manque de leadership sur lequel on peut se fier et des promesses non tenues, une apathie politique parmi le peuple. Je n'ai pas pu résister à la tentation d'en parler !
Embrace the Limitless : Titre à propos de l'avancée technologique et sa façon d'interagir avec nos imaginations les plus folles. Des imprimantes 3D ? C'est incroyable !
Orpheus : Chanson personnelle. Ne jamais se retourner pour tenter de recréer quelque chose qui est révolu. Très difficile pour beaucoup de gens, moi y compris.
Domination Game : A moitié politique. A propos de ces gros pays qui prennent le contrôle des plus petits...
Peacekeeper : Ne jamais cesser de vouloir plaire et de conserver la paix autour de soi, et un jour "bim" une chose tourne mal et vous vous retrouvez jugé pour cela. Il suffit de regarder dans les média... des gens sont descendus pour une simple erreur, et on oublie tout le reste.
It's a Wonder : Chanson classique avec le thème "c'est toujours mieux ailleurs", basée sur le poème "Das Ideal" de Kurt Tucholsky.
The Morning Light : Il faut apprendre à affronter sa peur.
Summer Always Comes Again : Très positive, ce qui est rare pour moi. A propos d'une renaissance, loin de la mélancolie.
Seasons of Age : Une énorme chanson selon moi, que ce soit sur le plan musical ou textuel. Basée sur le vieillissement. Personne n'aime ça, et pourtant nous sommes tous impuissants face au poids des années.
Au final, quels sont tes thèmes préférés sur cet opus ?
"Seasons of Age", "You, the Shallow" et "Hyperventilating" !
"Seasons of Age" sonne comme une conclusion parfaite. Une des meilleures chansons de Voyager selon moi, es-tu d'accord ?
Oui, je pense la même chose. Elle est si différente... et pourtant si accrocheuse, si mélancolique mais si positive. Je suis 100% d'accord.
Un clip vidéo a donc été tourné pour "Hyperventilating", peux-tu nous en dire plus à son sujet ?
C'est énorme ! Beaucoup de lasers, un écran géant et une ribambelle de couleurs. Notre premier clip où on ne voit que le groupe. En ligne depuis quelques jours !
Vous tournez beaucoup en Australie et avez fait quelques concerts aux Etats-Unis. Quels sont les prochains projets de Voyager ? Conquérir l'Europe ?
Oui, absolumennt ! On jouera au ProgPower Europe 2014 en octobre au Pays-Bas, et on espère en profiter pour faire quelques shows supplémentaires sur votre contintent. je pense que cet album peut bien marcher en Europe, nous espérons vraiment y revenir plus régulièrement !

As-tu d'autres projets de prévus ? Je sais que t'avais quelques idées pour un truc solo axé "electro dark synthpop", où cela en est ?
Les chansons sont là mais j'ai manqué de temps ces derniers mois. Je peux cependant promettre qu'il verra le jour d'ici deux ans. C'est TRES différent de Voyager mais très accrocheur, sombre et mélodique. Le titre de travail pour l'instant est "The Dreamer".
Quelles sont tes récentes découvertes musicales ?
Chimp Spanner, Haken, Fair to Midland, Robin Guthrie and Thom Brennan (ambient), John Grant (de la dark pop assez incroyable) et Todd Terje (de la disco dance norvégienne hilarante et géniale).

Hi Daniel, thanks for answering our questions! What is your state of mind a few days before the official release of this new work?
Excited that the world finally gets to hear what's been called "Our best album yet".
Fifth album of the band, called V... That's a simple and yet risky name as it must be a cornerstone in your discography! How did you decide it and did you hesitate with other names?
We actually weren't going to have a title at all but then we thought "V" is just too good a name not to use. It is simple, clear and, of course, roman numeral five. It just makes sense.
You started a crowfunding campaign in order to release this new album. A new way to fight the difficulties in the music industry or a way to involve fans deeper?
Honestly, the music industry was just a bit frustrating so we decided to take matters into our own hands - it was a difficult decision because these things can go wrong (see ORGY's failed campaign and the backlash that came with that) but we were pretty confident that we had the fanbase to reach our target. And we almost doubled it, which is amazing. It is SUCH a good way for fans to get involved and help the band DIRECTLY. The music industry is undergoing a massive transition now and we are proud to be a part of something new and bigger...
In the end, is the CD release still backed by Sensory Records or is it 100% self-financed work?
Sensory had no involvement at all, it is 100% self-financed, self-promoted and self -released on our record label IAV (I am Voyager) Records. Do I sound proud?
Musically, this album sounds even more complex than before but YET very catchy. It must have asked you a lot of work... was the writing/recording process different and harder than before?
Not at all, in fact it was the easiest it's ever been. We worked so well together and everything just flowed seamlessly and became a super catchy album. It was much more a "whole of band" effort than ever more. It's almost been more work organizing the release and promotion after the recording. As our drummer Ash said recently "we almost spend more time "being a band" than playing music"". Such is the business I guess.
You chose "Breaking Down" as a teasing single, was this choice guided by a precise will?
I think it's a good transition between the "older" Voyager and the "new" Voyager. Interestingly, lots of people don't think it's representative of the new style. Our new videoclip is for "Hyperventilating", which is a standout groovy song; I think it will hit a lot of people as very modern sounding, but still 100% VOYAGER.
On this new CD, old fans will recognize "The Morning Light", a song we can hear on your first album Element V. Why did you record a new version of this one?
It's funny, this song was the only one on Element V which sounds like we could have written it now. So it was a natural choice to re-record to sound a bit more modern. I wanted to keep the original vibe of the song too and not add too much more, and I think we've succeeded.
On the album, we can find two guests. Let's first mention Daniel Tompkins on "Breaking Down", he was there on the previous album too (on the song "The Pensive Disarray")... Does it mean that a great friendship has born between you two?
Absolutely. There was nobody else who could have sung those melodic screams as good as him. Daniel has a project with Scott from Voyager called "Absent Hearts" which is just beautiful - so using Dan again was a natural progression.
Female singer Zemyna Kuliukas is featuring on "A Beautiful Mistake". Can you give us information on who she is and why she is singing on this specific song?
I first saw Zemyna perform with her old band Dead Set Radio and fell in love with her voice. She sounds so much like Anneke van Giesbergen and I thought it would be great to have her sing on what is probably the most progressive song on the album. The end just sounds so Devin Townsend-esque, it's perfect! She was also a lot of fun to work with and I definitely want to do some more work with her.
Overally, do the lyrics cover a certain specific canvas of conceptual ideas or are there different stories?
Definitely less introspective than the last album, here's a rundown of the lyrical themes for "V"
HYPERVENTILATING - A lot of people I speak to get anxiety attacks (luckily I don't), so I thought it was an interesting concept to explore. Something that comes out of nowhere and shakes you
BREAKING DOWN - This is more introspective- breaking out of a comfort zone and just losing it totally.
A BEAUTIFUL MISTAKE - Explores the sense of wonder about the world and how it has come to be. A wondrous and scary place at the same time.
FORTUNE FAVOURS THE BLIND - Interlude to You, the Shallow. Very Orwellian in lyrical content.
YOU, THE SHALLOW - One of the few political songs. Lack of genuine leadership and broken promises, political apathy amongst the people. I couldn't resist 😉
EMBRACE THE LIMITLESS - Really about advancement of machines and the way they interact with our colourful imaginations. 3D printers? Incredible!
ORPHEUS - Personal. Don't look back and try to recreate something that has passed. A tough one for many people, including myself
DOMINATION GAME - Semi-political. All about big countries taking over smaller ones..
PEACEKEEPER - A constant striving to please and keep the peace and then BAM, one thing wrong and you get judged for it. Look at the media - character assassinations for the 1% wrong, when nobody looks at the 99% right...
IT’S A WONDER - Classic "grass is greener" song. Based loosely on Kurt Tucholsky poem theme. "Das Ideal"
THE MORNING LIGHT - An oldie but a goodie. Overcoming fear.
SUMMER ALWAYS COMES AGAIN - unusually positive song for me lyrically - about a rise out of melancholia.
SEASONS OF AGE - In my view a mammoth song both sonically and lyrically. All about getting older. Nobody likes it, and we are powerless against it!

"Seasons of Age" sounds like a perfect ending to this album... for me one of your best songs ever, would you agree on that?
Yes, I really do think so. It's do different, yet so catchy, so uplifting and yet so melancholic. Completely 100% agree.
A video clip has been shot to promote this album, can you tell more about it?
It's HUGE, lots of lasers, a massive LED screen and colours galore. Our first "band only video". It's out NOW
You're touring a lot in Australia and you also did some gigs in USA. What are the next plans for Voyager? Conquering Europe?
YES absolutely. We are playing ProgPower Europe 2014 in October (woohoo) and are looking at a few more shows around this time in Europe. I think this album will do well in Europe and we really hope that we can come back much more often!

Have you got other projects or maybe featurings in mind aside from Voyager? You had plans for a solo "electro dark synthpop" project as you said to us at the end of 2011 but I don't think I've seen it released yet...
The songs are there but the time just isn't. I promise in the next couple of years it will see the light of day. It's VERY different to VOYAGER but still catchy, dark and melodic of COURSE! Working title is "The Dreamer"
What would be your most recent musical discoveries let's say this past year?
For me it's been Chimp Spanner, Haken, Fair to Midland, Robin Guthrie and Thom Brennan , (ambient), John Grant (amazing dark pop) and Todd Terje (hilariously awesome disco dance from Norway).
