Le 4ème album des australiens de Voyager a vu le jour il y a un peu moins de deux semaines chez Sensory Records. Parlons donc de ce fort réussi The Meaning of I avec le leader/chanteur/claviériste du groupe Daniel Estrin, présent depuis les debuts de ce groupe qui est un peu le sien. Laissons donc Danny nous emmener en voyage le temps de quelques minutes, pour une entrevue riche en anecdote et en informations.
Ju de Melon : Bonjour Daniel et tout d'abord merci de nous accorder cette interview ! Une question pour commencer, comment tu te sens au moment de sortir ce 4ème album de Voyager ? Excité ? Stressé ?
Daniel Estrin : Merci Julien, c'est toi que je remercie. Je me sens super bien car je pense que cet album est notre meilleur à ce jour. La production est immense, les compositions sont solides, c'est vraiment une pièce épique ! En fait, j'adore l'écouter, ce qui n'est pas très habituel pour un artiste.
Pour ce nouvel opus, vous avez un nouveau label : Sensory Records. Pourquoi ce changement et pourquoi eux ?
Parce que Dockyard 1 et Dockyard 2 nous ont usé et ont abusé de nous avant de couler comme le HMAS Voyager (NDLR : un navire de la Royal Australian Navy qui a coulé en 1964) ! Pas bon tout ça. Sensory a été super avec nous jusque là et nous sommes excités d'avoir Ken (NDLR : Ken Golden) avec nous. C'est quelqu'un de confiance et fiable qui a fait beaucoup de choses pour le metal progressif ces dernières années.
L'album s'intitule donc The Meaning of I. C'est le premier album de Voyager sans le fameux "V" dans son intitulé, c'est une révolution ! Comment vous est venue l'idée de ce nom ?
Héhé, en effet c'est une vraie révolution ! Cet album est un effort profondément introspectif, ce titre était une évidence. Puis Georgie Grie, l'artiste qui a fait la pochette et l'artwork, avait une ouevre intitulée "In Search of Meaning", du coup cela est presque devenu le titre a notre album. J'ai de suite su que c'était le bon choix. C'est en quelque sorte un nouveau chapitre pour Voyager, le logo "V" a un un léger changement de design, et le contenu sonne un peu progressif et un poil plus lourd je pense !
Le précédent disque était une réVolution pour le groupe de part son titre (I am the reVolution)... Est-ce que celui-ci est plus une évolution vers quelque chose d'autre ou le juges-tu complètement différent des autres ?
Je pense que celui-ci constitue une évolution naturelle. Il me semble que nous avons trouvé notre son et nous en sommes pleinement satisfaits, du coup nous savons parfaitement où on va. C'est en quelque sorte différent mais toujours avec la même direction... c'est ça l'évolution !
Parlons de ce nouveau CD en détails. Abordons tout d'abord l'hommage rendu à Peter Steele (Type O Negative) avec la chanson "Iron Dream"... Ce morceau doit être très important pour toi.
Totalement. Type O a eu une grande influence sur moi dès le début de ma carrière, il était inévitable que je dédie une chanson à Peter Steele. Et même si la chanson est remplie de son essence et de sa présence, je pense qu'elle garde ce côté Voyageresque !
Est-ce que le titre "He Will Remain" est lui aussi en relation avec le Géant Vert ? Il a l'air lui aussi plutôt triste et empli de deuil...
Pas du tout. Il s'agit d'un morceau très personnel que j'ai écrit pour un bon ami à moi qui a récemment décidé de mettre fin à ses jours. Je l'ai joué à ses funérailles, un moment d'une émotion exceptionnelle.
Quelques mots sur les invités. Premièrement, Daniel Tompkins (TesseracT) sur la chanson "The Pensive Disarray". Comment es-tu rentré en contact avec lui et quelles étaient tes attentes en "l'engageant" ici ?
En fait, notre guitariste (Scott) a travaillé quelques temps avec Dan sur un projet appelé Absent Hearts, il me semblait donc que ce serait sympa de faire "débuter" Dan sur l'album. Sa voix est incroyable et je pense qu'elle s'accorde parfaitement à l'atmosphère de cette chanson. C'est l'une de mes préférées personnellement.
Nous pouvons également entendre D.C. Cooper (Silent Force, Royal Hunt) sur la très accrocheuse "Fire of My Times". Comment cette collaboration a pu se faire ?
Accrocheuse en effet. Cela fait des années que je suis un grand fan de Royal Hunt et je lui ai simplement demandé par e-mail. A la base il était plutôt réticent je pense, mais ses fils adorent vraiment Voyager et l'ont convaincu d'accepter. Nous sommes depuis devenus amis et nous conversons régulièrement. Un gars super et un magnifque apport sur le nouvel album...
Parlons un peu de quelques autres chansons... Est-ce que "She Takes Me (Into the Morning Light)" a un lien avec "To the Morning Light", chanson présente sur le premier album Element V ?
En quelque sorte oui, assez vaguement. Elle suit la même logique au niveau des cordes et contient quelques éléments de chansons telles que "Sober", "Cross the Line" et donc "To the Morning Light". C'est selon moi une chanson très typée "Pop Top 50" et accrocheuse.
"To the Morning Light" qui d'ailleurs fut ta chanson préférée jamais composée... est-ce encore le cas aujourd'hui ?
Je pense oui. Je ne me lasserai jamais de la jouer. Tout ce qui est accordé en Fa Dièse mineur, c'est vraiment mon kiff !
Cette question sera peut-être la plus dure de toutes, mais qu'est-ce que "the meaning of I" pour toi ? Peut-être peut-on faire un lien avec la chanson du même titre pour expliquer ce "concept"...
Le "meaning of I" (NDLR : Signification du "moi", de "mon être") est en ce qui me concerne quelque chose de très mystérieux. J'ai en quelque sorte posé les questions sur cet album... peut-être que le prochain en apportera les réponses !
J'ai l'impression que les paroles de "Broken" ont une signification profonde... de quoi parle cette chanson ?
Globalement toutes les paroles de ce CD sont assez profondes, personnelles et émotionnelles. Oui, ça y est, je deviens émo (rires) ! "Broken" parle de ces choses que l'on ressent et dont on ignore si elles sont réelles ou non. A certains moments et d'un point de vue subjectif elles peuvent l'être, à d'autres moments non. Elles parlent aussi de quelque chose qui se casse à l'intérieur de nous et qui ne sera jamais réparé... Avoir à gérer ces choses n'est pas simple, mais "on continue" [en français dans le texte] !
On peut t'entendre chanter ou parler en allemand mais aussi en russe sur ce nouvel album... Est-ce qu'un jour on peut imaginer t'entendre en français sur un album de Voyager sachant que tu connais un peu notre langue ?
Oui !! Mais ça veut dire que je devrais faire les interviews "en français". "Et je te t'assure, mon français est vraiment mauvais !" [en français dans le texte]
Jamais une question évidente pour un artiste mais... quelles seraient tes influences musicales majeures sur ce nouvel album ? Je dirais bien Ozric Tentacles, Type O Negative (trop facile), Depeche Mode, Pagan's Mind, Soilwork, Nevermore... mais chacune bien intégrée dans la personnalité du groupe... es-tu d'accord et en rajouterais-tu d'autres ?
Nevermore et Pagan's Mind, pas trop. Pour le reste t'as raison (même si je n'écoute pas trop de Depeche Mode). Depuis quelques années, rajoutons aussi pas mal de musique ethnique qui tourne dans mon lecteur MP3 : Omar Faruk Tekbilek, de la musique Malayalam et quelques sons cool ambiants, de la house progressive et de la psytrance. On peut aussi rajouter Scar Symmetry, Blood Staind Child, Soilwork, Angra et d'autres bons trucs metal. Quand je me détends, j'adore me brancher sur di.fm, une station de radio qui joue toutes sortes de musique électronique. Très sympa ! Oh et comment ne pourrais-je pas mentionner Infected Mushroom ?!
Est-ce que pour toi Voyager est "simplement" un groupe de metal progressif ou appelerais-tu ta musique différemment ? A moins que tu n'y attaches pas trop d'importance... 😉
J'y attache de l'importance car les gens aiment savoir ce qu'ils écoutent. Je pense que nous faisons de la musique heavy intelligente, émotionnelle et accrocheuse. Sinon les catégories en tant que telles sont superflues.
En parlant de ton chant, il semble que tu donnes tout, encore plus qu'avant, sur ce nouveau CD. Y compris même sur les passages extrêmes... par exemple ces growls death dans "Are You Shaded?", au début j'imaginais que c'était un invité (rires). Bref, tu penses t'être amélioré à ce niveau ? Quelques leçons ou plus de travail ?
(Rires) c'est Alex qui fait ces chants extrême ! Je fais quelques growls ici et là mais c'est lui le maître en la matière. Sinon je ne prends aucun cours, je pousse au maximum et le fait de m'enregistrer dans mon propre studio me permet plus de liberté... avec beaucoup beaucoup de vin rouge et de chocolat !
Parlons des autres membres du groupe, on dirait bien qu'ils ont encore plus participé dans le processus d'écriture, est-ce le cas ?
Oui, c'est certain. Avec l'arrivée de Scott dans le groupe, le côté créatif est devenu plus conjoint plutôt que moi écrivant la plupart des chansons. Cela a brillamment fonctionné ici, quelques riffs ou bases de chansons écrits par les autres gars se sont parfaitement intégrés au reste - comme par magie ! 😉
Pour toi quelle serait la chanson la plus aboutie sur cet album et pourquoi ?
"The Pensive Disarray" je pense. Par toutes ses atmosphères, son côté très sombre, elle est très intéressante et fichtrement émotionnelle.
Une question à propos d'une potentielle tournée... Vous avez fait pas mal de dates récemment, quels sont les plans désormais ?
Une tournée en première partie de Children of Bodom en Australie, puis après on va faire notre propre série de concerts dans le pays en 2012 je pense. Ensuite, j'espère vraiment qu'on ira conquérir le monde par delà les mers !
En espérant que vous passerez en Europe et, enfin, en France !
Ce n'est pas impossible ! J'aimerais beaucoup jouer avec Heavenly, un de mes groupes français préférés !
Quelques questions à part... Quelles sont tes récentes découvertes musicales cette année ? De nouveaux groupes et de nouveaux horizons ?
- Les japonais de Blood Stain Child sont vraiment fous, leur dernier album est une sorte de techno électro metal avec du chant féminin. Super accrocheur, très direct mais superbe.
- Krister Linder : quelle voix ! “Turning daisies” est une chanson incroyable !
- Over Unity, un très jeune groupe de notre ville Perth. Ils m'ont vraiment impressionné avec le style progressif, un chant magnifique et des lignes mélodiques superbes.
- N'importe quoi du label japonais Otographic, surtout Shingo Nakamura !
Le ou les meilleurs albums 2011 en ce qui te concerne ?
- Hiroyuki Oda – Thirty (remixes)
- En metal, définitivement Blood Stain Child – Epsilon. Trop bon !
Est-ce que t'aimerais un jour faire une sorte d'album solo genre électronique ? J'ai un peu le sentiment que tu ferais quelque chose de pas mal dans ce style...
Mais comment tu sais ça toi (rires) ?! C'est en effet prévu... J'ai pour but de sortir un album du genre au début de l'année prochaine ! Ce sera de la synthpop électro dark... Je pense que même certains métalleux vont aimer ça !
Mais plus de black metal comme ton premier projet Nachthimmel ? Je sais que tu veux un peu garder ça secret désormais... (rires)
C'est marrant que t'en parles car, lors de la tournée avec Alestorm, après avoir quitté la scène, les gars d'Alestorm sont venus à tour de rôle avec une photo de moi de l'époque Nachthimmel... et ils voulaient mon autographe ! L'horreur absolue !

Hi Daniel and first of all thanks for accepting this interview! Simple question to begin with, how do you feel before releasing this 4th Voyager album to fans all over the world? Excited? Totally anxious?
=> Merci Julien! Thank you for having me. I feel amazing, because I think this album is our best to date. The production is huge, the songwriting is strong and it’s an epic piece! I actually love listening to it, which is unusual for an artist!
For this new one, you have a new record compagny: Sensory Records. Why this change and why them?
=> Because Dockyard 1 and Dockyard 2 used and abused us before drowning like the HMAS Voyager! Not good. Sensory have been great so far and we are stoked to have Ken on board. He is reliable and has been doing things with progressive metal for years!
The name of this new album is The Meaning of I. It's the first Voyager album without the "V" in it... that's a revolution 😉 ! How and why did you pick this name?
=> Haha that IS a revolution. The album is a massively introspective piece and the title was apt. Then when George Grie, the artist, had a piece called “in search of meaning” which became the title piece, I knew it was the right thing to do. It’s a bit of a new chapter in Voyager, slightly new V logo design, slightly more progressive sound and a little bit heavier I think!
The previous album was a reVolution... Is this one more an evolution towards something else or do you feel it completely different once again?
=> I think this one is a natural evolution. I think we’ve found our sound and are so comfortable within it that we now know exactly what we’re doing. It’s different, but in the same direction… Evolution baby!
Let's dig deeper into this new CD. First of all, let's talk about the tribute to Peter Steele (Type O Negative) in the song "Iron Dream"... It must be a very important song for you personally.
=> Definitely. Type O was a big influence on me from the early days and I thought it fitting to dedicate a song to Peter Steele. While I think the song channels his essence, I don’t try to copy Type O Negative and keep the song VOYAGEResque still!
Voyager - Iron Dream (In Memoriam: Peter Steele)
Is the song "He Will Remain" also connected to the Green Man? As it seems to be a very sad and mourning one too...
=> Not at all. This one is a very personal song which I wrote for a good friend of mine who took his own life recently. I played it at his funeral and it was exceptionally moving.
A few words on the guests. First, Daniel Tompkins (TesseracT) on the song "The Pensive Disarray". How did you get in touch with him and what were your expectations when you "hired" him?
=> Well, Scott (guitarist) has been working on a project with Dan for some time called “Absent Hearts” so I thought it would be great to have Dan “start” on the album. His voice is incredible and I think it fits the mood of the song perfectly! It’s one of my personal favourites.
We also have DC Cooper (Silent Force, Royal Hunt) on the very catchy song "Fire of the Times"... How this collaboration happened?
=> Catchy indeed. I’ve been a big fan of Royal Hunt for years and I just emailed him. He was reluctant at first I think, but his sons LOVE VOYAGER and convinced him to do it. We’ve become friends since and chat frequently. Great guy and a magnificent addition to the new album… ..
Let's talk about some other songs... Has "She Takes Me (Into the Morning Light)" a connection with "To the Morning Light", a song on your first album Element V?
=> It does in a vague distant way. It follows on from similar chord progressions and kinda has elements of “sober”, “cross the line” and “to the morning light” in it. It’s a nice catchy poppy number I think.
"To the Morning Light" which used to be your favourite Voyager song, you told it to me two years ago... Is it still the case nowadays?
=> I think so. I never get sick of playing it. Anything in F sharp minor usually becomes my favourite J
This question may be the hardest of all but... what is "The Meaning of I" for you? You may rely on this song's lyrics to explain of course! 😉
=> The meaning of I for me is a big cloud of mystery. I asked the questions on the album. Maybe the next one will bring the answers!
I feel like the lyrics in "Broken" have a very deep meaning... what is it about, roughly?
=> Pretty much all the lyrics are quite deep, personal and emotional. Yeah, I’ve gone all emo! “Broken” is about feeling certain things and not knowing whether they are real or not. Subjectively at one point in time they may be, but at others they may not be. It is also about something breaking inside which you know will never be fixed. Dealing with that isn’t easy.. Mais on continue!
We can hear you singing/speaking in German but also in Russian (I'm not so sure about this one) on this new album... Would you someday consider trying something in French as I know that you are familiar with our language?
=> YES! But that means I would need to do interviews en francais. Et je t’assure, mon francais est vraiment mauvais!
Always a hard question for an artist but... what would be your major musical influences on this new album? I would say Ozric Tentacles, Type O Negative (well, that's too easy), Depeche Mode, Pagan's Mind, Soilwork, Nevermore... but all very well integrated in the band's own personality... what would you add to this (or object)?
=> Nevermore and Pagan’s mind not so much, the rest you’re right (although I don’t listen to much dépêche mode either. For a few years now, a lot of ethnic music has been cranking in my player, Omar Faruk Tekbilek, some Malayalam music and heaps of chillout, progressive house and psytrance, as well as Scar Symmetry, Blood Staind Child, Soilwork, Angra and other metal greats! When I’m chilling there is nothing I love more than di.fm , a digital radio station which plays all sorts of electronic music. So good! Oh and how could I forget INFECTED MUSHROOM!
Is Voyager simply a "progressive metal" band for you or would you call your music style differently? Or maybe you don't care that much... 😉
=> I care only because people like to know what they are listening to. I think we are catchy emotionally intelligent heavy music. Otherwise categories are superfluous.
About your vocals, you seem to be "give it all" more than ever on this new CD. Including with your extreme vocal parts... for example these death growls in "Are You Shaded?", at first hearing I thought it was a guest there *laughs*. Anyway, how much do you think you have improved on your singing? Lots of work/lessons?
=> Haha that’s Alex man. I do a few growls here and there but he’s the master at the death growls. No lessons. Just pushing it, being able to record in my own studio with heaps more freedom and LOTS of red wine and chocolate.
Let's talk about the other band members. It seems that they have participated a lot in the writing process, more than ever?
=> Yes they sure have. With the addition of Scott in the band, it was much creative joint process, rather than me writing most of it. It worked out brilliantly, some riffs added here and there and some songs the other guys wrote the entire basis for and I just worked my “magic” 😉
What is for you the most successfully accomplished song on this album and why?
=> The Pensive Disarray I think. Just because it is so layered, so dark, so interesting and so damn emotional.
One question about the Tour that would follow the release of this album... You've done lots of dates recently, but what are the plans now?
=> Touring with children of bodom around Australia, then our own little tour around Oz next year I think. Then hopefully back overseas again to conquer more of the world!
Hopefully a European Tour and, finally, a show in France? 😉
=> It’s not unlikely! I’d love to play with HEAVENLY, they are one of my favourite French bands!
A few side questions... What are the best musical discoveries you've made this year? New bands, new horizons?
ð Blood Stain Child from Japan à they are crazy, their latest album is techno electro metal with female vocals. Catchy as hell, cheesy but awesome.
ð Krister Linder – what a voice. “Turning daisies” is an INCREDIBLE song.
ð Over Unity, a very young band from our home town, Perth, really impressed me with their progressive style and great vocals and unique melody lines.
ð Anything from the OTOGRAPHIC label (japan), especially shingo nakamura!

Voyager - Broken
Would you consider doing someday a kind of solo "electro-oriented" album? I have the feeling that you may do something good with it!
=> haha absolutely, how did you know. I aim to have such an album out by early next year! Dark electro synthpop. I think even some metalheads will like it!
No more black metal stuff such as Nachthimmel? I know you want to keep it hidden from everyone now... *laughs*
=> Funny you should say that, on tour with ALESTORM, after we came off stage, all the ALESTORM guys were standing there in a row with photos of me from the NACHTHIMMEL days wanting my autograph. THE HORROR!
