"Une nouvelle énergie était là, on était prêts à repartir !"
La Grosse Radio s’est rendu au festival Madrid is Dark en décembre et a pu s’entretenir avec Tom Palms fondateur et guitariste de la formation hollandaise culte Phlebotomized. Rare en concert c’était une occasion unique de savoir ce qu’était devenu le groupe depuis son retour sur les planches en 2013 et quels étaient les futurs projets du septette.
Salut Tom, le 9 décembre à Madrid, tu nous as offert un show immense et intense, comment était cette expérience en festival pour toi et le groupe ?
Tom Palms : Le festival était fantastique. On ne s'était pas rendus compte qu'il y avait tant de monde venu nous voir. Pendant le concert et encore après, les gens étaient super enthousiastes. On a vendu notre merch en un quart d'heure. Les fans nous ont raconté des histoires de fou, on est honoré de savoir que notre musique les inspire autant !
Il y avait d'ailleurs un nouveau morceau, "My Dear", qui a été dévoilé il y a quelques semaines, est-ce que ça veut dire qu'il y a un nouvel album à venir ?
Tom : Les morceaux sont composés, les paroles écrites. On en est toujours au stade des répétitions, je ne sais pas quand ça pourra être enregistré et sortir. Pour moi, le plus tôt sera le mieux...
Vous vous êtes séparés en 1997, après la sortie de Skycontact, quelle en était la raison ?
Tom : On s'est séparé un an après l'enregistrement de Skycontact à cause de problèmes personnels. L'enregistrement était difficile et quelquefois douloureux. Mais c'est justement cette tension qui a fonctionné sur l'album. La créativité était à son sommet, et tout a changé trop vite après ça. Les chansons qu'on a écrites ensuite n'avaient plus rien à voir avec notre passé. Je n'arrivais plus à les rapprocher de Phlebotomized.
Maintenant, vous êtes reformés. Quand est-ce que ça a été décidé, et pourquoi ?
Tom : Début 2013, on a joué "Subtle Disbalance Liquidity" lors d'une release party pour promouvoir l'édition spéciale du vingtième anniversaire de Devoted to God et Preach Eternal Gospels. Courant 2011 et 2012, quelques labels se sont intéressés à Phlebotomized. Roel, de Vic Records, a eu la chance de faire cette édition du vingtième anniversaire. Le label américain The Crypt a également fait une sortie en double vinyle. Ted Vreeman, de Cryonics (anciennement Cyber Music) voulait faire une réédition de Immense Intense Suspense et Skycontact dans une triple édition. Ca ne s'est pas fait, et nous avons donc fait un deal avec Hammerheart pour faire les deux albums dans des éditions vinyles aux colorations différentes et dans une édition digipack double CD. J'ai donc commencé à travailler les remasterisations et ai contacté les autres membres originaux. C'est comme ça que le cœur de Phlebotomized a commencé à battre à nouveau... Après la release party, on a senti que les membres n'en avaient pas fini avec le groupe. Une nouvelle énergie était là, on était prêts à repartir !

Qu'avez-vous fait, toi et le groupe, durant toutes ces années ?
Tom : Lawrence a chanté dans quelques groupes : blues/rock/dérivations metal. Plus maintenant cela dit... Dennis a chanté dans un groupe de stoner appelé Towtruck et a commencé avec moi un groupe de metal appelé Held, de 2005 à 2009. On faisait du thrash/death/heavy metal. Maarten a commencé à jouer dans un orchestre. Jordy a joué de la batterie, de la basse et de la guitare dans plusieurs groupes de punk/hardcore. Patrick et moi avons joué dans un groupe de rock, She shall..., de 1998 à 2002. Je vis de ma musique. Je suis professeur de guitare et j'ai étudié la guitare classique.
Immense Intense Suspense et Skycontact sont tous les deux des albums fantastiques mais ils sont très différents, pourquoi ?
Tom : La musique de Immense Intense Suspense a été écrite entre 1990 et 1994 et a plus été influencée par moi en tant que compositeur. Skycontact a été écrit entre 1994 et 1996. Trois semaines avant les enregistrements, 60% de la musique était composée. Les 40% restants ont été écrits et répétés durant ces trois dernières semaines. En studio, nous avons essayé beaucoup de choses différentes et expérimenté beaucoup plus. Skycontact est plus influencé par le travail de Lawrence. C'est un album très personnel. Les morceaux "Achin" et "I Know You Know (in 4 parts)" en sont de parfaits exemples.
Le nouvel album sera différent lui aussi ? Peux-tu nous en dire plus et nous dire quand il sortira ?
Tom : Le nouvel album sera différent de Immense et de Skycontact. Il est écrit vingt ans plus tard, pourtant j'y utilise quelques riffs que j'avais déjà à l'époque. Il est plus direct, au niveau des paroles aussi. Ce sera extrême niveau rythme. "My Dear" aurait pu être un morceau de Skycontact. Les autres morceaux varient entre doom/death/black/thrash/heavy/symphonic/prog metal. Définitivement lourd !
Skycontact est de ces albums qui viennent d'une autre planète, comment fut sa conception, le choix de son artwork étrange (comme une peinture de Bosch) et de quoi parle-t-il ?
Tom : Je prends ça comme un compliment. Je suis très, très fier de cet album. Il n'est pas facile à comparer à d'autres albums de metal. Même si Lawrence et moi étions des personnes très différentes, on avait la même idée des émotions que nous voulions exprimer à travers notre musique. On était une bonne équipe de composition. On voulait exprimer la souffrance, la recherche de beauté, l'équilibre, un appel à l'aide, le désespoir, la colère gardée trop longtemps au fond de soi, la tristesse....
Dans le titre "StoleShowSoul", Lawrence s'est inspiré des prédicateurs de la télé Américaine. Dans "Achin" c'est du pur chagrin. "Sometimes" est né de la douleur et évoque un poème néerlandais écrit par mon père. La musique reflète une étape dans la lumière après une période d'obscurité amère.
Le thème de "I lost my cookies in the disco" est l'aliénation, le fait de ne pas se sentir le bienvenu, de se sentir différent, moqué…Dans "I hope you know" on parle de regret, désespoir, espoir….
En général, le ciel est la limite. Il n'y a rien au-dessus. Mais il n'existe pas essentiellement que ce que l'on voit. Il y a beaucoup plus partout que ce que l'on peut comprendre, appréhender... On peut donc aller plus loin que ce que l'on se fixe.
La pochette a été faite par un artiste qui a créé ces imageries après avoir écouté notre musique. Il y a trouvé d'autres choses, des messages cachés. Tout est là.
Phlebotomized est un nom étrange pour un groupe, qui l'a trouvé et qu'est-ce que ce nom veut dire pour toi ?
Tom : Lawrence l'a utilisé dans un morceau nommé "Tragic Entanglement" que nous avons enregistré dans notre démo Devoted To God : "Phlebotomized By An Insect..." C'est un terme médical. Une incision dans tes veines, laissant couler le sang. On a trouvé que ça sonnait bien et que ça correspondait bien à notre musique, ce qui semble bizarre pour beaucoup, non ?
Vous êtes un groupe difficile à classer, quel est le secret de votre écriture et de votre style sonore ?
Tom : Les riffs et les mélodies sont le résultat d'une approche intuitive. On joue toujours ce qui nous semble bien. On voulait être différents. On a toujours mis beaucoup d'idées dans un morceaux, avec des breaks et des accentuations pour que ça reste intéressant pour nous. Le secret, si on peut appeler ça ainsi, est une collaboration entre Lawrence et moi. L'intuition rencontre la structure et le savoir de la théorie musicale. Notre son a évolué du death, doom, grind à un bordel symphonique avec des instruments désaccordés. Ce son est le résultat d'intérêts divers dans la musique. Du classique au grind. mais aussi du metal, rock, pop, new wave, stoner, grunge, sympho, prog, dance, soul, blues...
Maintenant, il y a de nouveaux membres. Peux-tu les présenter et nous dire ce qui les a amené vers Phlebotomized ?
Gerben Mol : batterie. Il joue dans un groupe de death metal old school, Burning Hatred.
Ben de Graaff : chant, il joue dans un groupe de doom, Facade, et un groupe de death, Sepiroth.
Rob op ’t Veld : claviers. Fondateur et leader du groupe de black metal alience Iscario.
Dennis Bolderman : guitare, il joue dans un groupe de thrash metal Magnetron.
Gerben : Blasts !!! Concerts.
Ben : chant vraiment lourd, contacts, concerts.
Rob : orchestration, intervalles dissonants, horreur, illustration, webdesign.
Dennis : la rigeur du thrash, un nouveau souffle, une nouvelle boutique en ligne.
Vous avez fait quelques concerts ces trois dernières années, y'aura-t-il d'autres dates et viendrez-vous en France ?
Tom : On va faire d'autres concerts et on aimerait bien venir à l'étranger mais on n'a pas de promoteur. On fait tout nous-mêmes. On a quand même l'impression que ça ne marche pas complètement dans notre propre pays. On ne rentre pas dans certaines catégories, c'est cool mais difficile quelquefois. On adorerait venir jouer en France. On attend l'invite !
Sur la chaîne Youtube, une vidéo a été prise pour un DVD, le projet est toujours d'actualité ?
Tom : Non, je pense qu'on va annuler ce projet. Ӭ
Quelles sont les influences, musicales ou artistiques en général, qui ont aidé à créer Phlebotomized ?
Le heavy metal, l'amour pour nos instruments, le fait de rencontrer de nouvelles personnes pour faire un groupe et enfin l'horreur.
Concernant nos influences, en général, c'est le death et le thrash. Des groupes comme Death, Autopsy, Nocturnus, Paradise Lost, Morbid Angel, Sadus, Napalm Death, Carcass. Pour moi, tu peux compter également Metallica, Anthrax, Megadeth, Slayer, Iron Maiden, Kiss, Scorpions, Motörhead, Queen, Dio, AC/DC, quand j'ai commencé à jouer de la guitare.

Hello Tom, the december 9th in Madrid, you offered us an immense and intense show, how was the festival experience for you and the band ?
Tom Palms : The festival was fantastic. We didn’t realise that so many people were waiting to see us live. During and after the show a lot off people were enthusiastic. We sold our merch in 15 minutes. A few fans shared some amazing stories. Honoured to hear how much our music meant and still means to those fans!!!
You played a new song in Madrid that was revealed few weeks ago, "My Dear", it means that a new album will come ?
Tom : The music and lyrics are written. We are still in rehearsing mode though. I don’t know when it will be recorded and released. As fast as we can as far as I’m concerned…”¨”¨
You split up in 1997 just after your opus Skycontact, what was the reason of it ?
Tom : We split up a year after the recordings of ‘Skycontact’ because of personal problems. The recording of Skycontact was difficult and sometimes painfull. But despite all that the tension worked out very well on the album. The creativity went sky high… way high… in my opinion our style changed to fast. The songs we wrote after Skycontact had nothing to do with our past. I could not relate it to Phlebotomized.
ӬNow you are back, when have you decide and why, to bring back Phlebotomized ?
Tom : In the beginning of 2013 we played "Subtle disbalanced liquidity" at a releaseparty to promote and celebrate the 20th anniversary edition CD of Devoted to God and Preach eternal gospels.
During 2011, 2012 a few labels showed interest in Phlebotomized. Roel from Vic records was the lucky one to do the 20th anniversary edition on CD. The Crypt from America did the same release on double gatefold LP. Ted Vreeman from Cryonics (former Cyber Music) wanted to do a re-release of Immense Intense Suspense and Skycontact as a triple gatefold LP edition. He did not succeed and therefore we made a deal with Hammerheart records to do both albums as a double gatefold in different coloured vinyl and as a digipack double CD edition. I started with the remasters and contacted the other original bandmembers. During that process the heart of Phlebotomized started to pump again… After the release party we felt that some of the original members were not finished with the past. With new people and new energy we decided to go on !

What did you do, you and the band, during all these years, always music ?
Tom : Lawrence sang in a few bands: blues/rock/metal orientated stuff. Not anymore though… Dennis sang in a stonerrock band Towtruck and started with me a metal band called Held (2005-2009). We played thrash/death/heavy metal. Maarten started playing in an orchestra. Jordy played drums/guitar and bass in several punk/hardcore bands like second chance and others bands/ projects. Patrick and I played in a rock band She Shall… (1998-2002). Music is my profession. I’m a guitarteacher and I studied classical guitar.
Immense Intense Suspense and Skycontact are both amazing albums but very different, why this difference ?
Tom : The music of Immense Intense Suspense was written between 1990-1994 and is more influenced by me as a songwriter. Skycontact was written between 1994-1996. Three weeks before the recordings 60 % of the music was finished. The other 40 % we wrote and rehearsed in those last three weeks. In the studio we tried a lot of different things and we experimented more. Skycontact is more influenced by Lawrence as a songwriter. It is a very personal album. The songs "Achin" and I hope you know in 4 parts are an example.
The new album will be different too ? Could you tell more about it and when it will be out ?
Tom : The new album will be different from Immense and Skycontact. It is written 20 years after Immense although I used some riffs I already had back then. It is more direct, also lyrically. It will be extreme in dynamics. "My dear" could have been a song on Skycontact. The other songs vary from doom/death/black/thrash/heavy/symphonic/prog metal. Definately loud !!!ӬӬ
Skycontact is one of these albums coming from another planet, how was its creation, the choice of its strange cover (like a Bosch painting) and what is it talking about ?Ӭ
Tom : I take that as a compliment. I am really,really proud of that album.The album is not easy to compare with other metal albums. Although Lawrence and I were very different people we shared a lot in how we wanted to express emotions through out our music. We were a songwriting team. The emotions we wanted to express were pure heartache, the search for beauty, balance, a cry for help, despair, anger kept to long inside, sorrow …

Content "Achin’ ’: Pure heartache.
Content "Sometimes" : ….Born from pain. A dutch poem written by my father. The music reflects a step into the light after a period of bitter darkness.

Content "I hope you know" : Regret, despair, hope….
In general : The sky is the limit. No hype, just way high. Just because we do not see, it doesn’t mean it’s not there… There is more out there than we can understand, comprihend... Though we can do more than we think…
The cover is made by an artist who created the artwork after listening to our music. Finding new ways, hidden messages, layered songs. It’s al there.
Phlebotomized is a strange name for a band, who find it and why this name means for you ?Ӭ
Tom : Lawrence used it in a song called "Tragic entanglement" which we recorded on our demo Devoted to God. Phlebotomized by an insect... It is a medical term. An incision in your vain, bloodletting…
We thought it sounded cool and the name fits our music, which is considered strange by many isn’t it ?
You are an unclassified band, what is the secret of your writing process and your sound style ?
Tom : The riffs and melodies are the result of an intuitive aproach. We always played what felt good to us. We wanted to be different. We always used a lot off ideas within one song, breaks and accents to keep it interesting to ourselves. The secret, if you can speak of such a thing, was the collaboration between Lawrence and me. Intuition met structure and knowledge of music theory.
Our sound evolved from death, doom, grind to a symphonic mayhem with de-tuned instruments. The sound is the result of a very diverse interest in music. From classical to grind. Metal/rock/pop/new wave/stoner/grunge/symfo/prog/dance/soul/blues…”¨”¨
Now you have new members could you presenting them and what they bring to Phlebotomized ?
Gerben Mol : drums, plays in old school death metal band Burning hatred.

You play some concerts since around 3 years, will there be more dates and will you come to France ?
Tom : We will play more gigs and we want to go abroad but we do not have a promotor. We do it all ourselves. It still seems that we are not fully excepted in our own country. We do not fit in a categorie and that is cool but difficult sometimes… Would be great to play in France. We are waiting for the invite !!!
On your Youtube channel a video was taken for a DVD, is the project is still current ?
Tom : No, I think we’re going to cancel the project.”¨”¨
What was the influences in music, or art or anything else to create Phlebotomized ?
1st : Heavy metal!!!
2nd : The love for our instruments.
3rd : Meeting the right people to start a band.
4th : Horror.
Generally : Death/thrash metal. Bands like : Death, Autopsy, Nocturnu, Paradise Lost, Morbid Angel, Sadus, Napalm Death, Carcass ! To me also Metaliica, Anthrax, Megadeth, Slayer, Iron Maiden, Kiss, Scorpions, Motörhead, Queen, Dio, AC/DC, when I started to play guitar.
