Mauvaise nouvelle pour le groupe hollandais, puisque leur bassiste Marjolein Kooijman a décidé de quitter la formation après 10 ans de bons et loyaux services. Elle avait rejoint le groupe en 2004, pour la tournée Sleepy Buildings. Aucune raison particulière n'est avancée, la musicienne évoquant juste son envie de faire autre chose et de se consacrer à d'autres projets. Son communiqué est reproduit ci-dessous. Plus inquiétant, le groupe annonce également vouloir faire un break, désirant prendre le temps de réfléchir à la direction qu'il souhaite prendre. Cette annonce peut être considérée avec une certaine inquiétude. En effet, malgré une musique et un dernier album de grande qualité, la sortie du EP Afterwords était assez ambigüe : récréation et cadeau aux fans, ou relatif aveu de la part des musiciens qu'ils manquent d'idée, ayant le sentiment d'avoir un peu fait le tour ? L'avenir nous le dira, en espérant qu'il ne s'agisse pas du début de la fin pour cet excellent groupe qui aura marqué son époque.

The ten years with The Gathering have been a great experience for me and a dream come true. Making music, traveling all over the world and meeting wonderful people everywhere: I am very thankful and happy to have been a part of this.
